More information

Willowflat Vineyard

Awatere Valley

This Gruner Veltiner comes from our Willowflat Vineyard in the Awatere Valley which produces vines with low vigour and sweet fruit; a perfect combination for aromatic varieties such as Gruner Veltliner.

Inland & Sheltered

The vine rows on Willow Flat Vineyard have been planted to correlate with the soil strata to ensure that the fruit ripens evenly. The structure of the low-vigour soil, coupled with reduced coastal influences, creates sweeter fruit here than on our other two vineyards.

Intensive vineyard management resulted in low cropping vines with very even ripening which made picking decisions on the 1.5Ha terrace easy.

We used four different fermentation vessels to construct this wine; 225L old French barriques, a 1000L new French oval, a stainless steel tank, and a concrete egg.

Winemaking Analysis

Winemaker's Notes

Hand Picked

The fruit was hand-picked, gently de-stemmed and pressed to tank where it was settled for 24 hours. The juice was then racked with a slightly increased amount of solids in order to assist with palate weight and texture in the final wine. At the end of fermentation the wines were left on lees and regularly stirred, again to add texture and complexity.

Tasting Notes

Creamy Texture

Extremely versatile especially with Asian cuisine, seafood, chicken & pork.

Food Pairings

Asian cuisine, seafood and white meats.

An extremely versatile wine when it comes to food pairing; especially good with Asian cuisine.

Consistently good. The 2015 vintage is mouthfilling, fleshy and dry (3 grams/litre of residual sugar), with rich, ripe stone-fruit and spice flavours, strong, vibrant, finely balanced and lingering. It's already very open and expressive.

Winestate Magazine

Full of personality, this mouth filling, rich wine was partly (15%) barrel-fermented. Delicious from the start, it has concentrated, ripe peach, nectarine and spice flavours, moderate acidity and a long, dry, well rounded finish.
