Yealands wins Gold for aromatic blend at 2021 International Wine Challenge.

Yealands Wine Group (Yealands) has just received a Gold medal for their aromatic blend Yealands Estate Single Vineyard P.G.R. 2020 at the highly respected 2021 International Wine Challenge (IWC). The intensive judging period took place from 14th to 23rd April, with all results made public on their website on 17th May. The IWC has been running for 38 years and is regarded as one of the most rigorous and influential wine competitions in the world.

“The Yealands team are pumped to receive a gold medal from the IWC for this wine,” says Natalie Christensen, Chief Winemaker for Yealands. “This is an interesting wine to make and our Single Vineyard P.G.R. from 2020 is a personal favourite. We had an incredible growing season that really favoured aromatic varieties, resulting in an exotic, spicy, perfumed blend with a beautiful rich and oily palate.”

With a judging panel consisting of wine experts and influencers from the international wine industry, as well as local commercial decision makers, buyers and MWs, an IWC medal-winning wine is tasted by no less than eight judges before being awarded. To receive a Gold medal, a wine must be scored 95+ points. This year’s competition saw just nine Gold medals awarded to New Zealand wineries, with close to three hundred wines entered from New Zealand across all categories.

The judges described Yealands’ Gold winning Single Vineyard P.G.R. as, “Pale straw with green flecks. Nose of lush Turkish delight and a palate that is silky and rich with flavours of melon, lemon and quince. Delicious.”

Alongside the Gold medal winning wine, Yealands also picked up four Silver medals.
