The season begins (bud-burst) when the vine comes out of its dormant, winter state and the first growing tips appear on the canes mid-September. A mild September and good following warm rains in October through until the end of December, resulted in fantastic vine growth. Careful canopy management through this spring growth phase ensured that we had all of the vineyards in great condition for flowering and fruit set.
Warm and windy weather in late December and early January were ideal conditions for Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay flowering. With a record run of rain free days for summer our Awatere grapes are in fantastic condition as we move into an early autumn harvest
With warm dry days continuing into March, grapes are ripening uniformly whilst cool nights ensure that grape flavours and acidity are optimised. We expect this seasons harvest to be the earliest on record and viticulture and winemaking teams are ready and eager to start.
