Holtzmann Vineyard

Central Otago

The G2 block on the Holtzmann Vineyard in Gibbston Valley, Central Otago, is 320 metres above sea level. The vines grow on undulating land of loess over granite schist soil.

Growing Conditions

Hot Days
Cold Nights

We have always had a soft spot for the wines coming out of the Gibbston sub-region in Central Otago.

Winemaker's Notes

Hand Plunging

For fermentation the parcel was gently warmed and inoculated with a select yeast to enhance varietal character. Regular hand plunging has helped to craft a wine with elegance and balance. 15% of the wine was aged for 12 months in new French oak barriques, 50% into second year and 35% into third year French oak.

The fruit is always the last into the winery, and comes up in small bins in a refrigerated truck. It gets a good start on the cold soaking process during the journey up to Marlborough!

The classy young 2014 vintage was grown in the Holtzmann Vineyard, 320 metres above sea level at Gibbston, and matured for a year in French oak barriques (25 per cent new). Deep ruby, it is mouthfilling, with generous cherry, plum and dried-herb flavours, vibrant, supple, rich and flowing

Showing some slight muted tar notes to begin, the medium ruby-purple colored 2014 Winemaker's Reserve Gibbston Pinot Noir has a solid core of plum and mulberry notes with underlying kirsch, dark chocolate and thyme hints. Medium-bodied, soft, ripe and plush in the mouth, it delivers velvety tannins and just enough acidity to back-up the ripe fruit, finishing with great length.

The 2013 vintage is a deeply coloured, youthful red from the Gibbston district, revealing fresh plum and dried-herb aromas and flavours. Mouthfilling and vibrantly fruity, with a subtle oak influence (matured for a year in French oak barrels, 25 per cent new), it has excellent depth and ripe, supple tannins.
