Awatere Valley

Willow Flat & Seaview

Our Seaview Vineyard is the most coastal vineyard in New Zealand and experiences some fairly harsh conditions as a result. It produces small, thick-skinned berries with intense flavours. In comparison, our Willow Flat Vineyard is further inland with reduced coastal influences, and creates a much sweeter fruit.

Two Distinct Vineyards

This Pinot Noir was harvested from two of our vineyards in the Awatere Valley; Seaview Vineyard and Willow Flat. 

The fruit was harvested in excellent condition and the resulting wine is showing lifted fruit flavours in the red berry spectrum.

The low yielding Pinot Noir blocks were harvested at optimum ripeness. All clones were harvested and made separately.

A portion went to a mixture of new and older French oak barriques to undergo malolactic fermentation and to age.

Winemaker's Notes

Elegance & Balance

The parcels were cold macerated at 6 - 8 degrees for around five days before being warmed and inoculated with selected yeasts. A fast, hot fermentation proceeded with regular and gentle mixing of the juice over the skins, which has helped to craft a wine with elegance and balance.

Medium to deep red/purple colour, bright and youthful. Attractive perfume of sandalwood, toasty and spicy, fragrant red fruits and quite sappy. Quite a classy wine, soft and balanced, fine and understated, with delicacy and charm galore. Quite pointed acidity, though. Also has intensity and length. A surprising wine.

Fruit from the ‘Neames’ block in the ‘Seaview’ vineyard, cool-fermented to 13.5% alc. and 4 g/L RS, the wine aged on lees 3 months. Bright, very pale straw-yellow, near colourless on edge. The nose is fresh and light with aromatic, lifted, rose-petal florals, exotic stonefruits and hints of honeysuckle, showing with growing depth and presence. Dryish to taste and medium-bodied, light and soft flavours of exotic florals are expressed with clarity and freshness. A fine phenolic, textural line supports the fruit and provides good body and line that carries the flavours to a long, sustained finish with floral and honied elements. This is a light, soft and subtly flavoured off-dry Pinot Gris with good vinosity. Serve with Asian or Middle Eastern cuisine and most white meat dishes over the next 2+ years.

Ripe, fresh red berry aromas lead to a mouthful of ripe concentrated cherry and red currant fruit with notes of dark plum and cigar. Dense and concentrated this is made to last with firm tannins and balanced oak. Delicious now but likely to be even better in time.
