Soon there will be 5000 bales of vine prunings placed here basking in the Marlborough sunshine! To ensure the vine bales burn cleanly and efficiently in our fire burners, we lay them to dry for 6-8 months beforehand. During winter, we bale our vine prunings to be burned in two specially installed burners in the winery to heat water. Each bale weighs around 200kg and when burned provides the equivalent heat of approximately 60Kg of LPG.
Approximately 10% of all our grapevine prunings are baled and then seasoned for up to 6 months, to ensure they burn cleanly. This process eliminates over 180 tonnes of CO2 per year.
