This week at the winery our contract team is hard at work bud rubbing.
Now that the vines are growing, we have to make sure the vine is concentrating its energy in the right places. That's where bud rubbing comes in! As the vine starts growing, buds and shoots will start to grow on the trunk and root-stock of the vine. This is not a part of the vine where grapes will be produced, however it still takes a fair amount of energy for the vine to grow these buds and shoots. Therefore, our contract team will rub the buds off of every single vine trunk so that the vine focus' it's energy on growing the grapes.
Hats off to our contract team! This very well could be one of the most physically demanding jobs in the vineyard each year.
