This week at the winery we've started pruning at our Seaview Estate Vineyard.
We prune our vines to maintain grape yield and quality. The first step of cane pruning is cutting out the old wood from the previous growing season. Next, the old canes are stripped out of the wire trellis leaving behind healthy canes. The canes still attached to the vine after stripping are then wrapped around the fruiting wires which is where the vintage 2019 grapes will grow.
Each year, every single one of our vines is cane pruned by hand. Pruning is one of the most important vineyard management practices to prepare the vine for the next growing season.
