This week at the winery we got our whole team involved in a pruning competition!
Now that our grape vines are going into dormancy for the winter, we can start pruning. Pruning is one of the most important activities in the vineyard as it sets up the vine for the next growing season. Grape vines can only produce fruit from shoots that are one year old so we need to prune away all of the excess canes in order for the vine to bare fruit.
This morning our entire vineyard team had a crash course in pruning and in the afternoon they had the chance to put their knowledge to the test. After a BBQ lunch, each vineyard employee got paired up with two people from our winery so we could start our first ever pruning competition. After a quick briefing from our Vineyard Managers, each team of three had a to prune a bay of vines (usually between 3 and 4 grape vines) & were judged on quality of pruning as well as speed.
Congratulations to our winning team comprised of: Hayden Palmer - Vineyard Employee, Emma Fowler - Visitor Experience Manager, & Diane Litchfield - Management Accountant!
