Burleigh Pie Wine Pairing Challenge

This week at the winery our winemaking team came together for a good (and delicious) cause.

Each year, legendary Marlborough bakery The Burleigh puts on a competition that seeks to find the best local wine matches for their delicious pies. The proceeds of this competition go towards three local Marlborough charities. Our winemakers were up to the task as they gathered an array of our new and old vintage wines to try with four different pies.

Some interesting pairs were made and the decision process was hard. Chicken, Mushroom & Leek pie with our 2015 Winemakers Reserve Pinot Noir and Steak & Truffle Cheese with 2017 Tempernillo were both close contenders. In the end, our winemakers all agreed that the Burleigh's Pork Belly Pie and our new 2018 Yealands Estate Single Vineyard Rielsing was the best pairing. The vibrant acidity of our Riesling cut right through the fatty pork belly and makes for an unreal combination. 

We're excited to see the results in a couple of weeks' time & help out the New Zealand Red Cross. Cheers!
