"Vibrant, lifted, mineral style with lovely purity and a mix of tropical and aromatic fruit. Hints of fig, passion fruit, elderberry and flint give lots of interest, and the palate is pungent, crisp, grassy and long. A benchmark Kiwi Sauvignon."

Like most Kiwi wines, this is a screwcap. Pinot gris is the backbone; gewurztraminer creates a lovely mouthfeel; and riesling adds tropical fruit. Tart, fresh and aromatic.

An adventurous 50% Pinot Gris/35% Riesling/15% Gewurztraminer blend created by winemaker Tamra Washington. Fresh pears and exotic summer fruits on the nose, while the Riesling provides a lift of acidity on the finish.

I also loved a Yealands Estate PGR 2013 I tasted recently; from New Zealands' Awatere Valley, it's a blend of pinot gris, gewurztraminer and riesling. It has a zippy freshness that gewurztraminer on its own tends to lack, but still has that exotic character that makes it work so well with thai food and other curries.

Lightly fragrant on the nose. Palate is flavoured by gooseberry, capsicum and herb notes and shows a bit of sweet and sour character. Pleasantly simple and light.

In the context of Sparkling Sauvignon Blanc, this wine is a stand out performance due to the quality of the base wine used. It's packed with flavours of citrus, gooseberry and fresh herbs along with some lime and lychee notes. Their is a fair degree of residual sweetness to the palate but this is a wine that hits its target market dead-on. Well made and very broadly appealing.

Here's a really appealing example. It has nicely complex aromas showing cirtus, tobacco and a touch of smoke. These flow through the mouth with gooseberry and lychee, passion fruit and that classic Awatere tobacco note. It shows really good concentration on the palate with proper depth and texture. A generous wine with wide appeal and a very reasonable price tag.

Some reductive notes on the nose, such as sweat. Rich, ripe, well flavoured Sauvignon Blanc showing gooseberry, passionfruit and a hint of green tobacco or tomato leaf. Not too sweet, showing controlled acidity, good concentration of flavour on the palate though some rather firm phenolics on the mid and back palate.

Lifted apple and green capsicum on the nose. Relatively sweet fruit flavours of gooseberry with a little passionfruit and capsicum. There's a degree of resudual sweetness here but it is pleasant and lively with good texture and a citrussy zing.

Herbal-mineral hints on the nose. Quite a ripe style with sweat and passionfruit over gooseberry, lychee and currant bud. Palate is warm and broad with some pretty big reductive characters showing through.

An attractive wine that shows a typically Awatere tobacco character on the nose. The palate is relatively ripe and round with grapefruit, gooseberry and capsicum. Clean and straightforward; nicely textural with pretty good concentration in the mouth.

Overt, lively, grassy note. Palate is bright and fresh with nice purity of cut grass, culinary herbs; beginning to show capsicum-like methoxypyrazines. One pnellist found it somewhat unbalanced between sweetness and acidity.
