NZI Sustainable Business Network Award Winner 2014

Yealands Family Wines has become the first winery in the world to carry the DQS Green Company GC-Mark for its winery operation at their Seaview winery in Marlborough. DQS Group (DQS) based in Germany are one of the leading certification bodies for management systems worldwide. DQS have developed a checklist of criteria to obtain a Green Company GC-Mark that is based on national and international recognized standards and regulations. To receive a Green Company GC-Mark, a company must succeed in “minimising its negative impact upon the environment.”

The Green Company GC-Mark was approved alongside an ISO 14001 certificate, the international global standard for an Environmental Management System within businesses. This ISO maps out a framework that a company or organisation can follow to set up an effective environmental management system. In the case of Yealands, the ISO 14001 certificate was awarded for the management of the environmental aspects and impacts associated with winemaking at Seaview Winery.

NZI Sustainable Business Network Award Winner 2014Yealands Family Wines (YFW) has been named overall winner at the 2014 NZI National Sustainable Business Network Awards, held in Auckland last night. This is the supreme accolade and is awarded to a business that has performed outstandingly well in all aspects of sustainability. The Marlborough based company also won the Restorative Impact Award for their composting and heating programmes which result in a net positive environmental impact.

CEO of the Sustainable Business Network (SBN) Rachel Brown says that this exemplary organization lead by a dedicated individual is leading the transformation to a more sustainable New Zealand. “Yealands Family Wines stood out to the judges because it innovates well across the entire business. It drives best practice, has consistent sustainability performance across all its operations and represents New Zealand well internationally” she says.

Yealands Wine Group crowned NZ Wine Producer of the Year 2014

IWSC Producer of the Year AwardYealands Wine Group has been named as New Zealand Wine Producer of the Year at the International Wine and Spirits Competition (IWSC). The prestigious title was collected by Simon Kelly, European Sales Director, at the awards evening held in London overnight. 

The Marlborough based, family-owned Yealands Wine Group collected an outstanding 37 medals, including a gold medal for the Yealands Estate Winemaker’s Reserve Gibbston Pinot Noir 2013 and 3 silver outstanding medals.   

The International Wine and Spirit Competition’s General Manager, Ewan Lacey, said, “Noticed for being one of the world’s few carbon neutral wineries, Yealands is considered to be one of New Zealand’s leading family-owned vineyards. Given that consumers are becoming increasingly concerned with environmental matters, the IWSC judges were impressed that founder Peter Yealands intends for his winery to be the most sustainable in the world.”

Yealands Family Wines has claimed the overall World Champion title at the International Green Apple Environment Awards held in London last night. The prestigious ceremony was held at the House of Commons, in the Palace of Westminster and celebrates environmental best practice.

Yealands Family Wines competed against more than 500 global nominations from a range of industries, taking home the Australasia Gold Award, as well as the supreme “World Champion 2014” title.

Yealands Estate Wines has been named as the Overall Large Business winner at the Fairfax Sustainable 60 Awards, held in Auckland last night. Yealands also claimed the top prize in the environment category, as recognition for its range of innovative solutions to common industry issues.

Founder and Principal of Yealands Estate Wines, Peter Yealands was humbled to see his company once again recognised as sustainability leader. “This award is particularly significant for us, especially when you look at the prominent New Zealand businesses participating. It shows what can be achieved when you have a strong vision and a great team that buy into that vision,” says Mr Yealands.

Best in Biz Awards International 2014

Yealands wins Gold in International Best in Biz Awards 2014

More than 200 public and private companies representing all sectors of the economy from more than 30 countries competed in Best in Biz Awards’ second annual International program. We are delighted to be crowned the gold winner of the Most Socially or Environmentally Responsible Company of the Year category in Best in Biz Awards 2014 International. These are the only independent business awards program judged by members of the press and industry analysts.

The finals were held at Lincoln University with Chief Judge Nicky Hyslop saying the Yealands entry stood out for its innovation, entrepreneurship and vision. The winner’s prize is a $20,000 grant toward overseas travel for study, research, marketing, or a combination of these.

The Yealands entry, one of six finalists from throughout the South Island, also won the Silver Fern Farms ‘Plate to Pasture’ award for consumer awareness, and the Lincoln University award for best use of technology and innovation, receiving $5000 for each.

“Peter impressed us with his philosophy of ‘think boldly and never say it can’t be done’,” Hyslop says. “He also demonstrated outstanding innovation inside and outside of the winery business. That was backed up by sound business practices integrated into every aspect of the operation, and a holistic ‘vine to bottle’ approach. Peter showed he was a visionary and had the will and the tenacity to convert that into a successful farm business enterprise.”

Yealands Family Wines is awarded two NZI National Sustainable Business Network Awards - the Energy Management and Renewables Impact Awards.

Yealands was selected as a finalist in the following six categories:

International Winner - 'Most Sustainable Medium Business'

Yealands Estate Wines was the only New Zealand organisation, and globally the only winery recognised by the leading global sustainability awards.

The International Green Awards were created with the aim of identifying companies that have exhibited leadership and innovation in their sustainability approach. 

The Most Sustainable Medium Business category is open to medium enterprises around the world, with total revenues between $10 million and $100 million. Judges commented that their aim was to reward an organisation that is innovating, challenging traditional wisdom and can show impressive first-hand results that can be replicated with other businesses. All entries were judged anonymously, to avoid any prejudice.

International Winner - Sustainable Wine Tourism Category

For the third year running Yealands Estate has won the award for Sustainable Wine Tourism Practices at the prestigious Great Wine Capitals Awards.

The Great Wine Capitals Best of Wine Tourism Awards celebrate innovation and excellence in wine tourism throughout the nine greatest wine regions in the world.

The panel of judges commended Yealands Estate for leading from the front and demonstrating their commitment to sustainability, rather than just talking about it.
“Thinking outside the vineyard and more about the future, Yealands lead the way, from plastic wine bottles to making their own charcoal from the canes in the vineyard. Wine is not just about grapes and Yealands proves once again that while sustainability is an easy word to say, the proof is in the pudding,” says Judge Chris Fortune. 

The Yealands Estate cellar door experience includes an educational sustainability winery tour. Visitors also have the opportunity learn first-hand about the sustainable initiatives via a complimentary interactive self-guided vineyard tour. A selection of picnic foods are available to match with Yealands Estate wines to complete the wine tasting experience.

The Great Wine Capitals is a Network of nine major global cities in both the northern and southern hemispheres, which share a key economic and cultural asset; their internationally renowned wine regions.


International Runner Up - Sustainable Business Category

Yealands Estate was runner up in the Sustainable Business Category of the Drinks Business Green Awards 2012, which recognises international leaders in sustainability and environmental performance.

Yealands Estate was one of 31 companies globally, to be nominated in these prestigious awards, run by Europe’s leading drinks publication.

The Drinks Business Green Awards encourage companies to decrease their impact on the environment, and is the largest programme in the world dedicated to raising awareness of green issues within the drinks trade.

Judged by an independent panel of sustainability and drinks industry experts, the Green Awards examine how companies manage various environmental issues including, water management, biodiversity, community environmental training, and supply chain efficiencies, along with the evolving challenges of global sustainability which face the industry.
